Credit-Rating: Survey shows depositors prefer a bank with bank deposit rating of ‘3’ to a bank with no rating

According to the results of survey conducted by First Rating System company in May 2009 in 6 Ukraines biggest cities (Kiev, Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk, Lviv, Odessa, Kharkiv) there is a need in independent rating of banks strength regarding their deposit reliability. Such rating should be easy to use and understandable.

The survey has captured depositors (both actual and potential) attitude to bank deposit ratings, their readiness to be guided by such ratings when deciding on depositing funds or before-due terminating deposit agreement, level of confidence to ratings depending on rating institution, and preferable rating format.

The depositors readiness to be guided by bank deposit rating when deciding on depositing funds or before-due terminating deposit agreement is rather high: the share of respondents, who positively answered this question is wider than of those, who would not use such ratings (21% - definitely yes; 26% - rather yes; 17% - rather no; 12% - definitely no; and 24% - no answer).

Independent rating agencies enjoy the highest respondents confidence as rating institutions (21% of respondents would entrust assessment to independent rating agencies). Even such influential (and uncontrolled) communication channel as friends advice has a lower priority given 18% of respondents voices.

As it is seen from the survey results, the majority of depositors would prefer a bank with open and public rating of 3 than a bank with no rating whatsoever (78% and 22% respectively). In such hypothetic situation as if the banks strength would be assessed 3 and the majority of banks in the country would be given the same rating, 68% of depositors would entrust their funds to a such bank (27% would deposit basing on the opinion that such rating exhibits overall situation in the banking sector, and 41% of respondents would deposit if terms were more profitable compared with other banks).
